The FM Side Of Things
After "Round One"
Following our remarkable victory against Napoli in the first round of the Champions League, we had a rather simple game against Newcastle where we won 2-1. We did so rather comfortably, even though Oliver and Arkadiusz Milik were out on injury, against a Newcastle team that is challenging for a European spot in the League.
Champions League Quarterfinal Leg 1 - 4/8/20
Barcelona were a tough draw for us, and with the added difficulty following the injuries sustained in the game against Napoli, we are in for a challenge. Kaj Sierhuis steps in for Arkadiusz Milik as our forward for todays game, and Filip Krovinovic will slot in right behind him to replace the Oliver. There are no other changes to the team.
Overall, it was a rather even game. We maintained majority possession, while they had more shots on goal than us. I was worried about what sort of outcome the game would have when Barcelona went 2-0 up 25 minutes into the first half thanks to goals from Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi. Federico Bernardeschi reminded us of his quality as he scored in the 65th and 74th minutes to draw us level with Barcelona and secure two crucial away goals.
League Game 32 Result
This game against Huddersfield Town saw Kaj Sierhuis score his first goal for us, and Memphis Depay scored a late equalizer to give us the result against relegation threatened Huddersfield Town.
Champions League Quarterfinal Leg 2 - 4/14/20
Barcelona are coming at us with the same team as last game, though with a lot more attacking intent for this all important leg two. Oliver returns to his position in the central attacking midfield as our only change between the two games.
Federico Bernardeschi got us off to a good start when he scored in the 28th minute as we began our offensive against Barcelona at Elland Road. Mitchell Weiser got a rare goal as we brought the aggregate up to 4-2, with the two away goals still looming largely over Barcelona. Lionel Messi did give them hope as he grabbed their first away goal in the 77th minute, but Memphis Depay snuffed any chance of a comeback six minutes later to bring the final aggregate to 5-3 as we soundly beat Barcelona and move on to the semifinal where we have drawn our title rivals from this season and last, Tottenham.
League Games 33/34 and FA Cup Semifinal Result
The next three games saw us score 10 goals and only concede four as we breezed past Bournemouth 2-1, Norwich City 4-1, and beat Arsenal in the FA Cup semifinal 4-2. We will meet Everton in the final for what should be one of the easier late-stage cup-games that we have been handed since I took charge four years ago. Arkadiusz Milik returned to fitness for the game against Norwich, where he scored. It was then his hat trick that saw us coast past Arsenal. I think that he will be in prime form for a good run-in against Tottenham in the Champions League semifinal.
Champions League Semifinal Leg 1 - 4/28/20
Tottenham are a team that we have often been capable of getting a good result against, and with Arkadiusz Milik back and Kristoffer Ajer resuming his position in the midfield, I feel that this will not be an impossible to win game. Harry Kane leads the line for them, he has gotten the Premier League Top Goalscorer award for the last 3 seasons straight, and stopping his lethal touch will be a priority for us.
Arkadius Milik scored his second hat trick for us since his return from injury just over a week ago in what was an absolutely dominating display in front of our home crowd at Elland Road. Oliver and Memphis Depay also got on the score sheet in a game that didn't see any action until the second half against a Tottenham side that seemed powerless to resist.
League Game 35 Result
The nest league fixture against West Ham saw us secure our second Premier League title in a row as we dominated the game, with both Federico Bernardeschi and Oliver getting on the score-sheet. This has cemented our place in greatness among the handful of teams that have won back-to-back Premier League titles. Our next steps to ensure that Leeds has truly been made great again are to win the FA Cup again, and secure our place in and win the Champions League final.
CHampions League Semifinal Leg 2 - 5/6/20
Tottenham came into this second leg without the use of Harry Kane, who found went over on his ankle in the league match in-between legs. This makes our game that much easier as we have one less attacking threat to worry about. No changes have been made to the side, and these same players will see out the rest of the Champions League if they are fit.
Antonio Rudiger suffered the embarrassment of scoring an own goal in the 37th minute as we got off to a shaky start. Whilst we did maintain the edge on possession, we allowed Tottenham to be in the position to shoot nearly twice as many shots on goal as us. Our main man up front, Arkadiusz Milik, kicked off the scoring for us in the 61st minute with saw us rise to 6-1 ahead on aggregate. A goal in the 80th minute from Memphis Depay saw us secure a 7-2 aggregate victory over Tottenham as we progress to the Champions League against a Bayern Munich side who narrowly edged out our fierce rivals, Manchester United, in a close 1-0 aggregate victory.
Finals, Finals, Finals!
For what will be the final episode of "Making Leeds Great Again", we will play the last league game of the season against Manchester City, the FA Cup final against Everton, and the Champions League final against Bayern Munich. Interestingly enough, the only other time that Leeds United have been in a Champions League final was in 1975 against Bayern Munich. While Bayern Munich did win on that occasion, the boys are not daunted by the prospect of facing them again, and our top strikers are prepared to secure revenge.
